Sound around


The principal aim of the two following activities is to help students explore how materials and space affect the acoustic performance of the environment.


As a preparatory exercise, ask students to remember their journey from home to school and their way to the classroom.

In a 5 minute discussion, ask them to describe which spaces were the loudest and which were the quietest.

There are different factors that can make a space noisy or quiet, you can facilitate the discussion with the following questions:

Was the space densely populated?

Was the space empty of any furniture and people?

Did the space have a high or low ceiling?

Did the space have any openings, like doors and windows?

What materials was the space made of?
